(2006-07-21) Number Of DFS Root On W2K3 Servers

Posted by Jorge on 2006-07-21

By default:

  • W2K3 Std Edition is limited to ONE DFS root (either domain-based or stand-alone based)
  • W2K3 Ent/Data Edition does not have a technical limit concerning the number of DFS roots

However…..

Installing the hotfix mentioned in KB article "You cannot create more than one domain-based DFS namespace on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903651) enables W2K3 Std. Edition to host MULTIPLE domain-based DFS roots. It does not enable W2K3 Std. Edition to host multiple stand-alone DFS roots!

More FAQs on DFS can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/techinfo/overview/dfsfaq.mspx

Cheers,
Jorge
