(2011-11-26) Switching Between Metro Style UI In Windows 8 And The Windows 7 Style UI

Posted by Jorge on 2011-11-26

Windows 8 (both the Desktop and the Server version) introduce the new Metro style UI you see on Windows Phones. Innovation is good and I do believe the Metro style UI is great on Windows Phones. tablet devices and tablet computers (when in tablet mode). The reason? You are using those devices through your fingers directly. For those devices where you still need to use a mouse I believe the Windows 7 style UI is much better and friendlier in use. So why it by default enabled on Windows Server 8 is a mystery to me. At least for Windows Server 8 I want to use the Windows 7 style UI and definitely not the Metro style UI.

Below you can see the differences when you click the START button.

So how do you switch? That’s an easy question to answer. It is a registry config that enables or disables the Metro Style UI in Windows 8. Below you can find the PowerShell code and in Figure 3 you can see the output. You do not have to reboot or logoff/logon again, the change of configuration is in effect immediately!

$reg = Get-ChildItem HKCU:\Software -recurse -include Explorer $reg Set-ItemProperty -path HKCU:\$($reg.Name) -name RPEnabled -value 0 $reg = Get-ChildItem HKCU:\Software -recurse -include Explorer $reg
