(2007-11-12) Windows Server Virtualization

Posted by Jorge on 2007-11-12

From TechED IT Forum in Barcelona…

During the keynote a lot of announcements were made. One of them being…

Windows Sever Virtualization got its final name. It will be a Windows Server Feature called "Hyper-V". The following are some of its features:

  • Up to 64 GB of RAM per guest
  • Support for 64-bits guest
  • Support for non-Windows OS’es
  • Support for Snapshots
  • Centrally managed by "System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM)". The cool part about SCVMM is that it will be able to manage VMware ESX installs. All from just one console

Oh, the interesting part is that Microsoft is making different SKU’s available of Windows Server 2008. Some of the SKU’s have Hyper-V and are $28 more expensive (at this moment: EUR 19,00) and some don’t. What do you think of it? Should the additional server role (Hyper-V) be free or not?
