(2011-02-16) Speaking At TEC 2011 In Las Vegas

Posted by Jorge on 2011-02-16

You may have heard it by now, and if not…TEC 2011 returns this year back to Las vegas, the Red Rock Hotel. And… there’s something to celebrate! This year is the 10th DEC/TEC! Party!!!!!!

(or click here)

Like every previous year I’m speaking at TEC. This year I’m delivering two sessions, one session about Active Directory and one session about FIM 2010.

(or click here)

THE ABSTRACTS OF MY SESSIONS ARE:

['1'] Locating Domain Controllers For Authentication And Access To The Default Domain DFS Share (SYSVOL)

Speaker: Jorge de Almeida Pinto

This session will focus on locating Active Directory Domain Controllers for two very important processes. The first process is authenticating accounts in AD followed by the process to access data stored on the default domain DFS share "SYSVOL" such as for example GPOs and logon scripts. Each process uses its own mechanism to locate a domain controller to service the request that’s being made. Both processes will be explained in detail in terms of how these work and how these interact with each other. To put everything together, a use case will be used to highlight the configurations even better. If time allows, a demo will be part of the presentation.

[2] Scripting The Migration Of The FIM 2010 Configuration Between Different Instances – The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Speaker: Jorge de Almeida Pinto

In addition to the Synchronization Engine, FIM now also has a Portal. Both the Portal and the Synchronization Engine contain configuration items that determine the behavior FIM2010. When having multiple instances of FIM 2010 (Development, Test, Production) it is important to have a semi-automated process that is able to migrate the configuration of one instance into the other instance as easily as possible. This session will focus on using the configuration export tooling, which is available within FIM, including experiences and best practices. If time allows, a demo will be part of the presentation.

For more information about other session abstracts, click on the corresponding category to go there.

I’ll be delivering one pre-conference workshops this year about disaster recovery together with Guido Grillenmeijer, Gil Kirkpatrick and Ulf "who’s ya daddy" Simon-Weidner. The four of us are the "Masters of Disaster" :-)

In addition to that I’ll be presenting about the DC Locator in AD for authN and SYSVOL/NETLOGON. From what I know right now, my session is scheduled on monday. There is a reason for it. Exactly one week later on October 11th we are expecting our new baby. We are hoping he/she comes a day earlier like Anne, so that his/her birthday will be: 10-10-10.

(2010-05-18) Experts Live 2010 – Dutch Event

Posted by Jorge on 2010-05-18

This is a Dutch event I will be speaking at, so the following text will be in Dutch.

Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Exchange 2010, OCS 2007 R2, Hyper-V, System Center en Forefront Identity Manager (FIM) 2010 hands-on gedemonstreerd.

Cheers,
Jorge

(2010-04-01) Developing An Active Directory Forest Recovery Plan

Posted by Jorge on 2010-04-01

Original Source: http://theexpertscommunity.com/item/view/id/3070

Original Author: Gil Kirkpatrick

I’m working with Guido Grillenmeier, Jorge de Almeida Pinto, and Ulf B. Simon-Weidner on the Masters of Disaster Active Directory Disaster Recovery workshops for TEC this year, and I have to say that I am very excited by the results so far.

Several years ago, Guido and I did the first "Masters of Disaster" workshops on AD disaster recovery, and they were very well received. Most of the workshop was focused on data recovery, e.g. recovering deleted users, groups, and so on, which was a new concept for most people. The final exercise of that workshop was a full forest recovery scenario, but in fact most people never managed to get all the way through the forest recovery process. It was complicated, the VMs were slow, and frankly, leaving the thorny forest recovery process to the end of an exhausting 8 hour workshop when the cold beer and nachos were calling probably wasn’t the smartest idea I ever had, either.

Since then, I’ve talked to a lot of people about disaster recovery planning for AD. Most people have sorted out the data recovery problem, either by using the native tools, or by using Quest’s Recover Manager for AD. But I am shocked at the number of companies that still have not developed a forest recovery plan. At a recent series of breakfast seminars I did here in Australia, fewer than 20% of the companies represented had developed a forest recovery plan. And these are large organizations whose IT infrastructure completely depends on Active Directory. And in case you’re wondering, NO, downloading and reading Microsoft’s forest recovery whitepaper does NOT count as a disaster recovery plan!

We decided to bring the Masters of Disaster workshops back to TEC this year, but with several important changes. First off, we’re not going to try to host 200 lab VMs on a massive blade rack and SAN… those of you who were at TEC at the Red Rock in Las Vegas know what I’m talking about. :) This year, each person will have their own server with VMs running on them. But more importantly, we’ve broken the workshop into two pieces. The first 4-hour workshop focuses on AD data recovery using authoritative restore, tombstone reanimation, and the new AD recycle bin in WS2008 R2. Jorge has put together a great lab book for this session, and I think you’ll really get a lot out of it. The second 4-hour workshop is focused on developing a forest recovery plan. We will walk you through the steps of developing a forest recovery plan in your own organization, taking into account things like recovery SLAs, mission-critical applications, remote sites, and so on. Using that knowledge, you’ll then develop a plan for the lab forest using templates and worksheets that we will provide. Finally, you’ll get to recover the lab forest using the plan that you created! How cool is that? And the best part is that you can take those templates and worksheets back to work with you and start working with your DR team to develop your organization’s own forest recovery plan.

So now there’s no excuse for not having a forest recovery plan for your organization’s Active Directory. We’ll walk you through how to build the plan, give you the materials to develop your plan back at the office, and we’ll give you a chance to execute a forest recovery in a hands-on lab environment. And when you’re done, you’ll be fully-fledged, card-carrying Master of Active Directory Disaster yourself!

So don’t be a drongo and wait for your AD to go cactus. Give the workshop a go, it’ll be bonzer!

I hope to see you at TEC in LA!

Cheers,
Jorge

(2009-04-15) A New Career Always Starts At TEC!

Posted by Jorge on 2009-04-15

Things happen at TEC you know?! J

During Stuart Kwan’s keynote session, Stuart issued a challenge to the DS MVPs to specify a list of feature requests in new versions of the OS. That list however, had to be delivered in the form of an Elvis Presley song. We happily accepted the challenge AND delivered it through a video! J You cannot imagine the things you can do when beers are included.

The song we created is based on "Don’t Step on my Blue Suede Shoes". Check out the hand on Guido’s shoulder and what do you think about my great Elvis impersonation??? J

Oh, of course you want to see the video….Here it is! (Make sure to turn on the sound!)

<LYRICS>

v.1 was the money

v.2 for the show

v.3 got you ready, now go go go

So don’t you

Recycle my new OU

You can do anything

But can you RTM ILM 2?

Can you give us some prune and

Can you give us some graft?

You better make us happy

So don’t give us the shaft.

took a purdy name and you made it a mess

Leave it as ADAM, not LDS

So don’t you

Recycle my new OU

You can do anything

But can you RTM ILM 2?

Now that you’ve got – an Identity Suite

Gimme some lovin on schema delete,

I need multi-domain on a single DC

I’m talkin’ ’bout writable not a GC

So don’t you

Recycle my new OU

You can do anything

But can you RTM ILM 2?

Who killed LDAP, and didn’t tell me.

What the hell’s a web-service doin’ on a DC.

Give me a GUI, not command-line hell

I need a management solution, not Power—WHAT?!?

…. <camera pans>

So don’t you

Recycle my new OU

You can do anything

But can you RTM ILM 2?

….wait a few seconds

<Jorge in Elvis mode> than’ ya, than’ ya very much! </Jorge in Elvis mode>

</LYRICS>

We even made it into Windows IT Pro as a Web Exclusive!

"I’m a star!" whoo-hoo…

Cheers, ehhh I mean…."than’ ya, than’ ya very much!" J

Cheers,
Jorge

(2009-04-15) TEC 2009 In Las Vegas

Posted by Jorge on 2009-04-15

As you might have seen or even experienced, TEC 2009 was this year back to Las Vegas (22nd – 25th march 2009). The guys from Netpro, now Quest, decided, based upon valuable customer feedback, to go back to a location where it is warm and sunny without freezing your a$$ of! J Thanks Gil for listening!

TEC was, as always, very cool! Somewhere in January I talked to Gil Kirkpatrick and we agreed I should do a session. Before that I did not have any idea on what topic I should talk about and that’s the main reason I did not summit anything in time. So, in January I still submitted a session abstract which was accepted. Again, many thanks to the TEC folks at Quest!

My session ("The Evolution of Object Recovery in AD – From basics to perfection – A Technical Deep Dive") was on Monday and I think I had about 75-100 people in the room out of 450 people in total. For those that were in my session, I hope you liked it! A copy of the PPTs can be downloaded here for those interested in seeing what I had to talk about. I spent most of the time attending ILM "2" related sessions as I was interested in what some people had to say about it.

I also already understood they want me back again at TEC 2009 in Berlin somewhere in September. If you could not make it to TEC in Las Vegas, make sure you get to TEC in Berlin! A lot of others (joe, Pamela, etc) have already mentioned it, and I will mention it again in short. Although Netpro was bought by Quest, TEC (a.k.a. DEC) kept its value! When I heard the first time that Quest had bought Netpro, the first thing I was afraid was that it would turn into some huge conference covering lots of Microsoft products. Why was I afraid of this? Well, Quest has quite a large product portfolio (related to AD, Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, PowerShell, etc. – and it keeps going and going) and I hoped TEC would still be TEC, meaning Microsoft Identity and Access Management technologies. Guess what?! TEC IS STILL TEC! Thanks again at the TEC people at Quest. Thank you for allowing TEC to keep its value!

After the sessions we also had some fun…. This is one of the videos that were made (look at all those cuties in a dress and the tough guys in a suit). You do something and suddenly you end up on YouTube. NOTE TO SELF: drink less beer! J

I almost had forgotten….. THE CHICKEN WAS ALSO THERE!

Cheers,
Jorge
